LIPOSUCTION & BODY CONTOURING
Minneapolis MN Plastic Surgery - Dr. Richard S. Werner
Liposuction (or body contouring) can be a standalone cosmetic surgery or used with other body shaping procedures.
Classic liposuction is used to treat a condition known generally as lipodystrophy, a condition characterized by protruding fatty deposits. Lipodystrophy manifests usually in females, affecting the person's figure by appearing in a variety of anatomic positions, including the abdomen, flanks, saddlebag area, inner thighs, knees and more. A frequent position is one where a person has two different body types above and below the belly button.
Areas of lipodystrophy are accessed through small incisions and the unwanted fat is simply vacuumed away carefully. Recuperation may be slightly challenging as it is crucial for optimal results to wear a tight elastic garment for several weeks.
A liposuction patient can choose which areas are suctioned, but the most effective and impressive results occur when multiple areas are suctioned. The volume of fat taken out is restricted to provide a considerable margin of safety; therefore, repeat liposuctions are a possibility if necessary or desired. Although larger amounts of fat can be taken out, the skin tightens, similar to shrink wrap.
The safety and effectiveness of liposuction has generally increased over the last 20 years. Problems like grooving or other contour irregularities are no longer common. Liposuction patients range from teenagers to the elderly.
