Vein stripping was invented in the 1940s to treat varicose veins. The Medtronic Company in the 1960s introduced the "vein eraser," where electrical energy was added to vein stripping. This technology was further refined, and is still in use today.

Insurance most often covers this procedure. You are anesthetized prior to surgery and sent home after surgery, with approximately a week's worth of recovery. Patients are told to elevate the leg or legs for the first few days.
